Vol. 548 No. 3

Written Answers. - Swimming Pool Projects.

Jack Wall

Question:

80 Mr. Wall asked the Minister for Defence the situation regarding the training of extra staff to ensure maximum possible use of the Curragh swimming pool by all schools and families in its immediate hinterland; and if he will make a statement on the matter. [4655/02]

The new swimming pool in the Curragh Camp was completed last summer and was officially opened on 17 September 2001. The question of appropriate staffing for the Curragh swimming pool is under review as part of a study of staff allocation in all areas of the Defence Forces training centre.

Notwithstanding the above, the pool is currently being used by three schools in the immediate area, during normal working hours. However, it will not be possible to extend the use of the amenity beyond normal working hours until the more general issue of staffing cover is resolved. It would be intended to make the facility available more widely in the event that appropriate lifeguard cover can be secured for additional periods.
