Vol. 548 No. 4

Written Answers. - Live Exports.

John Gormley

Question:

123 Mr. Gormley asked the Minister for Agriculture, Food and Rural Development the number of live cattle and sheep which were exported from Ireland to Greece for slaughter or further fattening in 2001; the number which travelled direct to Greece by boat; the number which travelled overland through continental Europe; and if he will make a statement on the matter. [5234/02]

A total of 274 cattle were exported to Greece in 2001. My information is that these animals travelled overland, through continental Europe to Greece. The protection of animals during export is regulated under the Diseases of Animals (Protection of Animals During Transport) Order, 1995, S.I. No. 98 of 1995, as amended. No sheep were exported to Greece during that year.
