Vol. 548 No. 4

Written Answers. - Animal Feedstuffs.

Jan O'Sullivan

Question:

8 Ms O'Sullivan asked the Minister for Agriculture, Food and Rural Development if he has satisfied himself that the controls that apply to animal feed are adequate; if traceability of animal feed is in place; and if he will make a statement on the matter. [4972/02]

I am satisfied that the controls on animal feed that are operated by my Department fulfil all the obligations under the EU regulations on animal feeds which are among the strictest in the world. The EU controls in this area are continually monitored and reviewed by the European Commission and have been intensified on a number of occasions. In relation to traceability, there is provision in Irish legislation to ensure traceability at all stages in the production and distribution of animal feeds. My Department takes legal action where any breaches of these requirements are found.
