Vol. 548 No. 5

Written Answers. - Health and Safety Standards.

Bernard Allen

Question:

232 Mr. Allen asked the Minister for Health and Children his proposals to introduce new legislation to ensure that Irish hospitals and health centres maintain the highest health and safety standards. [5326/02]

I have no plans to introduce new legislation in this area. The regulatory service of the Radiological Protection Institute of Ireland through its inspectors tries to ensure that all activities involving the use of ionising radiation are carried out in a safe manner. I am advised that an inspector from the institute carried out an investigation of the incident referred to by the Deputy and confirmed that the dose administered was not significant. As the licensing authority in this area, the institute insisted that tighter measures were put in place by the licensee.
