Vol. 548 No. 5

Written Answers. - Mobile Telephone Masts.

Rory O'Hanlon

Question:

267 Dr. O'Hanlon asked the Minister for Health and Children if his attention has been drawn to the fears of many people regarding health hazards arising from the erection of mobile telephone masts; the view of the World Health Organisation on such masts; and if he will make a statement on the matter. [5525/02]

I am aware that there are some concerns over possible health risks from non-ionising radiation associated with the operation of mobile phone masts. I am advised that the World Health Organisation has assessed the many reviews carried out in this area. The WHO has said that none of the reviews has concluded that exposure to radio frequency, RF, fields from mobile phones or their base stations causes adverse health consequences. However, there are gaps in knowledge that have been identified for further research to better assess health risks. It will take about three to four years for the required research to be completed, evaluated and to publish the final results of any health risks. Mobile phone companies licensed to operate here are required to comply with radio-frequency exposure levels developed by the International Commission on Non-Ionising Radiation Protection, ICNIRP, and recommended by the WHO.
