Vol. 548 No. 5

Written Answers. - Water and Sewerage Schemes.

Denis Naughten

Question:

319 Mr. Naughten asked the Minister for the Environment and Local Government if he will approve funding for the Elphin sewerage scheme; and if he will make a statement on the matter. [5468/02]

A draft brief for the appointment of consultants to prepare a combined preliminary report for this and a number of other schemes was submitted to my Department by Roscommon County Council in August 2001, but has not been approved. The Elphin sewerage scheme was included as a longer term objective – 2006 to 2026 – in the list of sewerage schemes submitted by Roscommon County Council in response to my Department's request to local authorities to undertake fresh assessments of the needs for capital works in their areas and to prioritise their proposals on the basis of the assessments. The priority lists were taken into account in the framing of the water services investment programme 2000-2002, announced in July 2000. Given the priority rating afforded to the scheme by the council, the level of competing demand and the funding available it has not been possible to include it in the programme.
