Vol. 548 No. 5

Written Answers. - Prisoner Escapes.

Nora Owen

Question:

387 Mrs. Owen asked the Minister for Justice, Equality and Law Reform the circumstances surrounding the escape of two prisoners from the back of a squad car in Cork recently. [5161/02]

I am informed by the Garda authorities that on 6 January 2002, the person in custody was conveyed in an unmarked Garda patrol car to two scenes of crime.

I am further informed that the prisoner was handcuffed while in Garda custody and that, for operational reasons at one stage, it was considered necessary to remove the handcuffs from the prisoner and at this point he broke free and made good his escape.

I am further informed that the prisoner was recaptured on 12 January 2002, and returned into custody. Only one prisoner was involved in this incident.
