Vol. 548 No. 5

Written Answers. - Swimming Pool Projects.

Sean Fleming

Question:

400 Mr. Fleming asked the Minister for Tourism, Sport and Recreation the position regarding proposals for the improvement works and the application for funding in respect of the swimming pool at Portarlington, County Laois. [5374/02]

Under the local authority swimming pool programme, which is administered by my Department, there are four stages in a swimming pool project following the submission of a feasibility study. These, in order of progress, are: preliminary report; contract document; tender; and construction. My Department's technical advisors, the Office of Public Works, evaluate each stage and local authorities cannot proceed to the next stage of a project unless prior approval issues from my Department. Grant aid is allocated only when tenders have been received for the project and will be capped at the time of allocation.

My Department approved a revised preliminary report for the proposed refurbishment works at Portarlington Swimming Pool in September 2000 and is currently awaiting the submission of contract documentation from Laois County Council. When this documentation is received the application will be considered further.
