Vol. 548 No. 5

Written Answers. - National Sports Stadium.

Seán Haughey

Question:

402 Mr. Haughey asked the Minister for Tourism, Sport and Recreation if he will report on recent developments concerning the construction of Campus Stadium Ireland; and if he will make a statement on the matter. [5511/02]

Campus and Stadium Ireland Limited – CSID – has concluded a contract with Rohcon, Waterworld UK and Dublin Waterworld to design, build, finance, operate and maintain the aquatic and leisure centre on the Abbotstown site. Work on the site began in May 2001, on foot of a letter of intent pending completion of the contract negotiations and CSID is assured that the construction of the pool is on schedule for completion in time for the Special Olympics Summer Games in 2003.

Meanwhile an overview of the Stadium and Sports Campus Ireland project conducted by independent consultants HighPoint Rendel – HPR – was published on 31 January 2002. The Government has requested me to report on the implications of the HPR recommendations and options and to evaluate: the viability of the existing tendering strategy as a basis for any modification of the stadium design and operation; the implications for the Exchequer of the options and recommendations; and the issues raised in Paragraph 1.7 of the report. Preparations for this evaluation are now under way.
