Breeda Moynihan-Cronin

Question:

91 Mrs. B. Moynihan-Cronin asked the Tánaiste and Minister for Enterprise, Trade and Employment the capital projects financed by her Department in County Kerry which commenced or were completed in 2001; the amount of money in each case; and if she will make a statement on the matter. [5711/02]

The provision of support to industrial projects is a day-to-day matter for the industrial development agencies under the aegis of my Department and not one for which I, as Minister, would have a direct function. The relevant agencies are Shannon Development, IDA Ireland and Enterprise Ireland.

I presume that the Deputy is referring to the financing of capital infrastructure projects. In that context the agencies' policy in recent years has been to move away from capacity building supports, such as capital grants, and towards supports targeted at improving specific business functions such as research and development and skills enhancement.

During 2001 Shannon Development's capital spend in County Kerry came to a total of €5.2 million in investment in Kerry Technology Park in Tralee. On completion of the project this will amount to €7.4 million. Enterprise Ireland gave approved funding of €126,973.81 towards Killarney Technology Innovation Centre in Deerpark, Killarney which was completed in 2001. Enterprise Ireland also approved funding of €34,282.93 for a community enterprise centre in Cahirciveen which was completed in 2001.

IDA Ireland's policy has been to make land available for capital projects where necessary rather than to provide capital financial supports. Recent IDA developments include the sale of a 1.3 acre site to Killarney Plastics Limited in 2000, the site was completed in 2001; the sale of a one acre site to Killarney Advance Factory Limited; agreement on a €1.2 million site development and landscaping contract for completion of the development of Killarney Business Park; and, in Cahirciveen, the sale of a 20,000 square foot unit to FEXCO Limited.
