Vol. 548 No. 5

Written Answers. - Coastal Protection.

Jackie Healy-Rae

Question:

96 Mr. Healy-Rae asked the Minister for the Marine and Natural Resources if he will allocate an estimated ?130,000 which is necessary to build a new sea wall between the pier road and the suspension bridge adjacent to the N71 road at Kenmare, County Kerry; and if he will make a statement on the matter. [5512/02]

Primary responsibility for coast protection works rest with the property owner, be that a local authority or a private individual.

In October 2001 my Department wrote to all coastal local authorities inviting proposals for consideration in the context of the 2002 coast protection programme. My Department has no proposals from Kerry County Council to build a sea wall between the pier road and the suspension bridge adjacent to the N71 road at Kenmare, County Kerry. Careful consideration will be given to any proposal which the local authority wishes to put forward for the location.
