Vol. 548 No. 5

Written Answers. - Harbours and Piers.

Jackie Healy-Rae

Question:

97 Mr. Healy-Rae asked the Minister for the Marine and Natural Resources the provisions he has made to allocate funds for the continuing work at Blackwater Pier; and if he will make a statement on the matter. [5513/02]

Blackwater pier is owned by Kerry County Council. Responsibility for its repair and maintenance rests with the local authority in the first instance. In 2001 my Department provided grant aid of £22,500 or €28,569.11 to the county council towards the removal of rock outcrop and a site investigation, costing a total of £30,000 or €38,092.14.

The county council has not submitted any proposal for additional works at the location. Any proposal which the local authority may submit to my Department in relation to the development of Blackwater pier will be considered in the context of the funding available and overall national priorities.

Question:

98 Mr. Healy-Rae asked the Minister for the Marine and Natural Resources the provisions he has made to upgrade the Tahilla pier; and if he will make a statement on the matter. [5514/02]

Tahilla pier is owned by Kerry County Council. Responsibility for its repair and maintenance rests with the local authority in the first instance.

To date my Department has not received an application for funding from the county council in respect of the location in question. Recently my Department's engineers inspected the pier. They recommended safety and maintenance work and advised the county council accordingly. The question of funding works at Tahilla pier will be considered on the basis of an application from Kerry County Council and in the context of the funding available and overall national priorities.
