Vol. 549 No. 1

Written Answers. - Flood Relief.

John Gormley

Question:

143 Mr. Gormley asked the Minister for Finance when his Department will undertake remedial works with a view to erecting proper sea and river defences in the Irishtown, Ringsend, Sandymount and along the Dodder Walk area of Dublin 6, to prevent further flooding; and if he will make a statement on the matter. [5924/02]

I am aware that a study of the precise causes of the flooding in each location is currently being undertaken under the direction of Dublin City Council. This study, when complete, will help to identify what long-term preventative measures may be feasible, the appropriate body or bodies to carry them out and the funding resources necessary. In the immediate term, a co-ordinated programme of emergency remedial works in the affected areas is already under way by Dublin City Council to prevent any risk of further flooding in the immediate future e.g. as a result of the predicted high tide on 28 February. My officials in the Office of Public Works are available to provide assistance to the local authority where appropriate.
