Vol. 549 No. 1

Written Answers. - Abortion Statistics.

Ruairí Quinn

Question:

45 Mr. Quinn asked the Minister for Health and Children the number of abortions carried out on Irish women in the UK for each year since records began; the figures for 2002 up to the latest date for which figures are available; and if he will make a statement on the matter. [5766/02]

The Office for National Statistics, London, compiles statistics on the number of Irish women who have abortions in England and Wales each year. That office has indicated that the earliest year for which this information is available is 1970. The number of abortions performed in England and Wales on women who gave Irish addresses in each year from 1970 to 2000 and from January to June 2001 is set out in the following table. Statistics for the period after June 2001 are not yet available.
