Vol. 549 No. 2

Written Answers. - Garda Transport.

Bernard J. Durkan

Question:

160 Mr. Durkan asked the Minister for Justice, Equality and Law Reform if he has satisfied himself that sufficient Garda cars of recent vintage are available to meet current and anticipated policing requirements; and if he will make a statement on the matter. [6233/02]

I am informed by the Garda authorities that there are currently 1,384 Garda cars attached to the Garda fleet and that the average age is 2.11 years.

I am also informed by the Garda authorities that this number is considered adequate to meet current policing requirements. New cars will be provided throughout the year to replace existing vehicles and to meet the exigencies of operational requirements. This year's purchases of vehicles will continue to decrease the average age of Garda cars in the fleet.
