Vol. 549 No. 2

Written Answers. - Third Level Courses.

Róisín Shortall

Question:

183 Ms Shortall asked the Minister for Education and Science if his attention has been drawn to the situation in a college (details supplied) in Dublin 1 where 33% of last year's final year of the degree course in architecture were failed when the failure rate is normally less than 10%; his views on whether this deserves investigation; if an explanation will be given to him by the college for such a high failure rate; and if he will make a statement on the matter. [6262/02]

The Dublin Institute of Technology is a statutory body established under the Dublin Institute of Technology Acts, 1992 and 1994. Under those Acts, the governance and day to day activities of the institute are matters for which the governing body and the management of the institute are responsible.

My Department has, however, made inquiries with the institute and has been informed that the Dublin Institute of Technology has an examinations appeals process at three levels. Students of the degree course at the school of architecture at Dublin Institute of Technology are currently appealing their examination results at the final level of this appeals process.

I also understand the issue raised by the Deputy is the subject of correspondence between the institute and solicitors representing a number of students. Due to this the institute has indicated that it is unable to comment on the matter at this stage. It would also be inappropriate for me to comment on the matter at this time.
