Vol. 549 No. 2

Written Answers. - Garda Complaints Body.

Austin Deasy

Question:

28 Mr. Deasy asked the Minister for Justice, Equality and Law Reform when he intends to introduce a new Garda complaints body; if he has decided on its format; and if he will make a statement on the matter. [6101/02]

As I have indicated previously in this House, the main features of the Garda inspectorate are set out in the measures I have published for its establishment. I refer the Deputy to these measures which have been laid before the Houses of the Oireachtas.

The legislation which is necessary to provide for the establishment of the inspectorate is currently being prepared. I am anxious that it should be introduced as quickly as possible. In that context, it has been included in the Government's legislative programme.
