Vol. 549 No. 2

Written Answers. - Paramilitary Organisations.

Dick Spring

Question:

51 Mr. Spring asked the Minister for Justice, Equality and Law Reform the steps being taken by the Garda to deal with the continuing threat posed by the organisation know as the Real IRA; the number of Real IRA prisoners held in jails in the State; and if he will make a statement on the matter. [6078/02]

The threat posed by the organisation known as the Real IRA is continually assessed by the Garda Síochána. Since its evolution, the activities and growth of the group have been combated with a considerable degree of success by the Garda Síochána through the many arrests, searches and seizures made against it. This has resulted in the conviction of many of its members on serious criminal charges in the Special Criminal Court. At present, there are 39 prisoners in Portlaoise Prison who align themselves with the Real IRA.

I am assured by the Garda authorities that they will continue to deal with the threat posed by the Real IRA through intelligence-driven operations.

Question No. 52 answered with Question No. 18.
