Vol. 549 No. 2

Written Answers. - Grant Payments.

Jim Higgins

Question:

75 Mr. Higgins (Mayo) asked the Minister for Agriculture, Food and Rural Development the reason for the delay in the payment of area aid and suckler cow grant to a person (details supplied) in County Mayo. [6150/02]

One of the parcels claimed by the person named in his 2001 area aid application overlapped with a parcel of land claimed by another applicant. The person named was contacted in this regard and in his reply clarified the position by including a map showing the correct position of the parcel. This information is now being entered on the Department's electronic database. When the area aid application has been fully processed and found in order, payments due under the 2001 area based compensatory allowance scheme and suckler cow premium scheme will issue.

Liam Aylward

Question:

76 Mr. Aylward asked the Minister for Agriculture, Food and Rural Development if his attention has been drawn to the fact that the new computer system in the area aid section of his Department is causing serious delays in payments; and the steps being taken to rectify the problems. [6151/02]

I do not accept that the new computer system in the area aid unit has led to serious delays in payments. The facts are that some 436,935 individual payments have been made in respect of the 2001 schemes to applicants totalling over €775 million. I also point out my Department has continued to make payments of over €83 million since the beginning of the year.

There have been some delays in processing a relatively small amount of outstanding 2001 cases. My Department expects to have these outstanding cases finalised within the next few weeks.
