Vol. 549 No. 3

Written Answers. - Garda Stations.

Jim O'Keeffe

Question:

175 Mr. J. O'Keeffe asked the Minister for Finance if his attention has been drawn to conditions at the Garda station at Dunmanway, County Cork; the reason the necessary repair work has not been carried out; if the work will be put in hand straight away; and the commencement date in this regard. [6484/02]

The proposed refurbishment and improvement works at Dunmanway Garda Station includes for the provision of a rear access and car park to the rear of the station. The Commissioners of Public Works are currently negotiating to purchase a strip of land at the rear of the station. Without this additional land, the planned refurbishment cannot take place. For security reasons, and in the interest of safety while refurbishment works are in progress, rear access to the station is essential. The acquisition of this extra land will also allow badly needed vehicular access to the rear of the station. When negotiations are finalised the refurbishment project will proceed to tender stage.

Bernard J. Durkan

Question:

176 Mr. Durkan asked the Minister for Finance the position regarding the provision of the proposed new Garda station at Leixlip, County Kildare; if full and final agreement has been reached with all other agencies with a view to early commencement of site works; the nature of difficulties which have arisen or are likely to arise; his proposals for a resolution; and if he will make a statement on the matter. [6887/02]

A number of difficulties have arisen in relation to the negotiations for the site for the new Garda station in Leixlip. One is that another party, other than Office of Public Works, has expressed an interest in acquiring the site from the diocese. Another difficulty relates to whether vehicular access to the site can be made compliant with local authority standards. These matters are currently receiving attention. All other possibilities are being actively pursued.
