Question:

214 Mr. Deasy asked the Minister for Health and Children his plans to provide a service in advanced pain therapy at Waterford Regional Hospital; and if he will make a statement on the matter. [6381/02]

I propose to take Questions Nos. 213 and 214 together.

The provision of services for people suffering from chronic pain is a matter in the first instance for the relevant health agency. The provision of services at Waterford Regional Hospital is a matter for the South-Eastern Health Board. I understand that a chronic pain service for the south east region is provided at Waterford Regional Hospital and treats approximately 170 patients a year. I am informed that proposals to develop the service further are presently being considered by South-Eastern Health Board.
