Written Answers. - Teachers' Remuneration.

Question:

398 Dr. Upton asked the Minister for Education and Science the number of temporary wholetime teachers who received back pay during the period from 1 September 2001 to 31 January 2002; and the number of eligible part-time teachers who received back pay during the same period. [6406/02]

Question:

399 Dr. Upton asked the Minister for Education and Science the number of temporary wholetime teachers and eligible part-time teachers who were in receipt of back pay during the period 1 September 2000 to 31 January 2002. [6407/02]

I propose to take Questions Nos. 398 and 399 together.

My Department provides a centralised payroll service for voluntary secondary, community and comprehensive schools for the payment of incremental salary grant directly to eligible teachers employed by those schools. Payment is issued in the first possible pay issue following the submission, by the nominating school and the teacher, of all required documentary and other evidence of eligibility for payment of salary. Delays in processing nominations arise due to lack of recognition of the nominee as a teacher and late submission of nominations by school authorities.

According to my Department's records 634 teachers, employed with effect from 1 September 2001, received their first salary payment after 1 October 2001. The corresponding figure for 2000 was 925.

Question:

400 Dr. Upton asked the Minister for Education and Science the average annual salary of teachers who began a new eligible part-time teacher contract in the academic year 2001-02. [6408/02]

Eligible part-time teachers, EPT, employed in voluntary secondary, community and comprehensive schools are included in my Department's second level teachers payroll. Based on current rates of pay and allowances, the average annual salary of a teacher who began an EPT contract in a voluntary secondary, community or comprehensive school in the academic year 2001-02 is approximately €20,674.

Agreed Report 10/2000 of the Conciliation Council for Teachers provides for the award of incremental credit, in respect of length of training, to EPTs with effect from 1 September 2001. Qualified EPTs will move up two points on the incremental salary scale and, as a result, the average annual salary of a teacher who began an EPT contract in the academic year 2001-02 will increase to approximately €22,000.
My Department does not have details of the average annual salary of EPTs employed in the vocational sector as they are paid by the vocational education committees concerned.
