Vol. 549 No. 3

Written Answers. - Schools Building Projects.

John McGuinness

Question:

426 Mr. McGuinness asked the Minister for Education and Science the reasons for the delay in providing the funding for a new school (details supplied) at the Rower, County Kilkenny; if he will expedite the application; and if he will ensure there is no further delay. [6576/02]

The allocation for primary buildings in 2002 is €153.6 million, which is a record level of funding and demonstrates the Government's commitment to improving the accommodation situation in primary schools. This is almost four times the previous Government's investment in 1997.

Since the Government came into office, there has been a great increase in the level of activity in the area of primary school building. This has resulted in a substantial increase in the number of major and minor building projects under construction, which has given rise to a record level of building and refurbishment activity.

As part of the expanded building programme, my Department expects to be in a position during this year to give detailed consideration to an application from the school in question for improved accommodation. The school authorities will be informed of developments.

John McGuinness

As part of the Government's programme, Carrigeen national school, County Kilkenny is being extended-refurbished and is currently in architectural planning. Under the expanded building programme, the project will continue to the preparation of tender documents and the invitation of tenders as soon as possible.
