Vol. 549 No. 3

Written Answers. - Schools Building Projects.

Michael Ring

Question:

441 Mr. Ring asked the Minister for Education and Science the exact details of his announcement regarding a new vocational school for Newport, County Mayo as announced during his visit to the county on 8 February 2002; if the money has been put in place for this project; if the money is in the 2002 budget for this project; if the catchment area has been selected; if this project has now been definitely approved; and if approval has issued in writing from his Department to the County Mayo VEC in this regard. [6716/02]

A new vocational school will be provided at Newport, County Mayo to cater for 40 pupils in the short-term. Preliminary enrolment projections for the proposed school, based on an estimated intake of 40 pupils per annum completing a six-year cycle, would suggest an overall enrolment of 240 pupils after six years. A more accurate calculation of long-term enrolments will be possible when a definitive catchment area has been determined. This matter will be finalised in my Department when the views of all the parties concerned have been received and fully considered.

The stage 4/5, detailed design-bill of quantities, submission for this project has been received in my Department and is currently being examined by the technical staff of the planning and building unit. When this examination has been completed, my Department will then be in a position to give formal approval to County Mayo VEC to invite tenders for the project.
