Vol. 550 No. 1

Written Answers. - Road Safety.

Bernard J. Durkan

Question:

153 Mr. Durkan asked the Minister for the Environment and Local Government the number of accident blackspots which have received specific attention by way of allocation of funding or otherwise by his Department in the past 12 months; and if he will make a statement on the matter. [7411/02]

The Government strategy for road safety 1998-2002 recognised the need for safer roads and included improvements at identified high accident locations among a range of measures designed to deliver this objective.

In relation to the national road network, the strategy set a quantified target of implementing specific accident reduction measures, under NRA co-ordination and financing, of 400 additional locations by 2002. Measures of this kind have to date been put in place at 342 locations on national roads by end 2001, including 74 in 2001, with a further 55 approved for 2002.
Similar measures were extended to non-national roads in 2000 under the low cost safety improvement works scheme. Funding was provided to carry out improvements on 206 locations on non-national roads to date, including provision for 147 in 2001. The 2002 non-national road grant allocations provide for funding of €2.542 million to enable improvement works to be carried out at a further 152 locations.
