Vol. 550 No. 1

Written Answers. - Greenhouse Gas Emissions.

Bernard J. Durkan

Question:

156 Mr. Durkan asked the Minister for the Environment and Local Government the extent to which his Department is in contact with the forestry authorities with a view to the encouragement of ozone friendly and efficient afforestation; and if he will make a statement on the matter. [7414/02]

I assume the question refers to maximisation of the carbon sequestration potential of forestry towards meeting Ireland's commitments under the Kyoto Protocol. Provisions in this regard are contained in the Government's national climate change strategy, copies of which are in the Oireachtas Library.

I refer to the reply to Questions Nos. 20 and 157 on today's Order Paper regarding arrangements for implementing the strategy. The Department of the Marine and Natural Resources is represented on the cross-departmental climate change team, and on its inventory data users and the economic analysis sub-groups. My Department is also represented on an internal climate team established within the Department of the Marine and Natural Resources.

Question No. 157 answered with Question No. 20.

Bernard J. Durkan

Question:

158 Mr. Durkan asked the Minister for the Environment and Local Government the countries or regions within Europe which are currently on target in terms of compliance with the guidelines set down in the Kyoto Protocol; and if he will make a statement on the matter. [7416/02]

I am not competent in relation to compliance with the Kyoto Protocol by European countries or regions generally. Relevant information in this regard is available in European Community and member states greenhouse gas emissions trends 1990-1998 on the website of the European Environment Agency, www.eea.eu.int
