Vol. 550 No. 1

Other Questions. - Road Network.

Jimmy Deenihan

Question:

7 Mr. Deenihan asked the Minister for the Environment and Local Government if he will consider the upgrading of the status of the N69 road to a national primary road; and if he will make a statement on the matter. [4129/02]

A comprehensive review of the national and regional road system was concluded in 1994 with the Roads Act, 1993 (Declaration of National Roads) Order, 1994 and the Roads Act, 1993 (Declaration of Regional Roads) Order, 1994. This review was carried out in consultation with the local authorities and took account of representations received from a wide range of interests.

The need for changes to be made with regard to the classification of roads in the national or regional network is being kept under review. Traffic patterns on the network will continue to be monitored in order to identify any long-term changes, which might have implications for road classification.

It is a long time since 1994 and traffic patterns have changed. Has this particular road been reviewed since 1994 and is it now under consideration?

I am not sure if it has been specifically reviewed. In my earlier response I said there is an ongoing review of the classification of roads both national and regional. I am sure this road is kept under review as part of that. In the past five years, over €6.8 million has been spent on improvements to this road.
