Question:

209 Mr. Deenihan asked the Minister for Finance the number of sites which were offered for the new Garda station at Castleisland, County Kerry; when a decision will be made on the purchase of a suitable site; and if he will make a statement on the matter. [7449/02]

I propose to take Questions Nos. 208 and 209 together.

Following an advertisement in both the local and national newspapers a total of eight pro posals were received by the Commissioners of Public Works. All of these proposals have been technically assessed by the commissioners, who have recommended two possible options to the Department of Justice, Equality and Law Reform. These have been ranked in order of preference and the commissioners are awaiting the views of the Department before proceeding.
It is not possible to say at this point when the project might commence. I can assure the Deputy, however, that the building of the station will be progressed as quickly as possible in accordance with the overall Garda building programme priorities.
