Vol. 550 No. 2

Written Answers. - Detention Centres.

Liz McManus

Question:

460 Ms McManus asked the Minister for Justice, Equality and Law Reform his plans in relation to the future of Shanganagh Castle Prison, Shankill, County Dublin; if his attention has been drawn to the number of vacant places in the prison; and if he will make a statement on the matter. [7473/02]

The director general of the Prison Service established a group to examine all options for Shanganagh Castle in the light of the very considerable decline in the number of young persons in custody found suitable for transfer to this centre in recent years.

I am informed that this group has recently submitted its findings to the director general in the form of a report on the viability of the castle in its present role. Copies of these findings are being circulated to all interested parties. It is expected that a four month consultation period will ensue to ensure all affected parties have an opportunity to state their case. A decision regarding the future of Shanganagh Castle will not be made until this consultation process has taken place.
