Vol. 550 No. 2

Written Answers. - Crime Prevention.

Question:

502 Dr. Upton asked the Minister for Justice, Equality and Law Reform the steps he proposes to tackle the growing problem of mobile phone theft. [7930/02]

I am informed by the Garda authorities that this type of theft generally takes place during the course of a burglary or through larceny from a person. The Garda Síochána is particularly conscious of the theft of mobile phones from the person and a number of significant arrests have already been made.

All Garda mobile patrols are proactively engaged in preventing this type of crime. Garda inquiries are ongoing, specifically in relation to persons suspected of being involved in such thefts.
