Vol. 550 No. 2

Written Answers. - International Sporting Events.

Bernard J. Durkan

Question:

529 Mr. Durkan asked the Minister for Tourism, Sport and Recreation the position regarding the use of a particular sports stadium or combination of stadia to host international football events; and if he will make a statement on the matter. [7904/02]

The use of particular stadia for international events is a matter for the governing body of the sport concerned. In relation to international football matches, the Football Association of Ireland has used a number of grounds throughout the country to stage various international matches, and indeed, international tournaments over the last number of years, particularly at under-age and junior levels.

The provision of substantial funding under my Department's sports capital programme has helped the FAI and their clubs to upgrade and improve their stadiums and helped facilitate the staging of these games in Ireland. At senior international level the FAI has an arrangement with the Irish Rugby Football Union whereby Ireland's senior international matches are played at the IRFU's stadium, Lansdowne Road.
