Vol. 550 No. 2

Written Answers. - Special Educational Needs.

Billy Timmins

Question:

583 Mr. Timmins asked the Minister for Education and Science the facilities in place for a 16 year old autistic person in the north Wicklow area; and if he will make a statement on the matter. [7659/02]

My Department allocates resource posts, special needs assistant posts and concessionary teaching hours to second level schools to cater for special needs pupils, including children with autism. Applications for such support are made to my Department by the relevant school authorities. Each application is considered on the basis of the assessed needs of the pupil or pupils in question and determined on the advice of the psychological service. If the Deputy has a particular case in mind and provides me with the details, I will have the matter investigated.
