Vol. 550 No. 2

Written Answers. - Psychological Service.

Gerry Reynolds

Question:

598 Mr. G. Reynolds asked the Minister for Education and Science the reason an educational psychologist has not been appointed to cover the primary schools in Carrick-on-Shannon, County Leitrim; and if this position will be filled as a matter of urgency. [7816/02]

NEPS is extending its service to further schools as additional psychologists are appointed. At present, the agency does not have a sufficient complement of psychologists to be able to offer a full educational psychological service to all schools. However, a recruitment competition for additional psychologists is nearing completion and it is expected that a number of appointments will be made to the north western region. In the meantime, primary schools in County Leitrim which do not yet have access to the psychological service provided by NEPS may avail of my Department's scheme for commissioning psychological assessments, full details of which are available from NEPS or from my Department's website.
