Vol. 550 No. 2

Written Answers. - School Staffing.

Michael Creed

Question:

631 Mr. Creed asked the Minister for Education and Science the estimated weekly cost of his Department's contingency plans on supervision and substitution; the additional costs involved if supervision and substitution was carried out exclusively by teachers; the estimated cost of making these payments pensionable; and if he will make a statement on the matter. [7979/02]

Funds have been provided to schools on the basis of the estimated cost of implementing the current proposals for supervision and substitution by permanent teachers. The costs of the contingency arrangements will be kept under continuing review.

The issues in relation to pensionability are primarily centred on the compatibility of these payments with the well established rules governing superannuation generally. In circumstances where cost is not the primary issue detailed actuarial calculations have not been undertaken.
