Vol. 550 No. 2

Written Answers. - Competition Law.

Austin Deasy

Question:

66 Mr. Deasy asked the Tánaiste and Minister for Enterprise, Trade and Employment her views on whether one individual has too much power where control of the media is concerned; if she has asked the monopolies commission to examine the situation; and if she will make a statement on the matter. [8047/02]

The legislative measures available for ensuring the maintenance of competition in the media sector as well as all other sectors are the Competition Acts, 1991 and 1996, and the Mergers and Takeovers (Control) Acts, 1978 and 1996. I have no plans to request the Competition Authority to examine the media sector at present.
