Bruton asked the Minister for the Marine and Natural Resources if he has received a request form the Irish Underwater Council for the replacement or renovation of the decompression chamber available for divers who get into difficulty; if so, when it was received; and the action to be taken in this regard. I have recently received a proposal from the Irish Underwater Council, IUC, to upgrade the hyperbaric facilities in University College Hospital, Galway.
The IUC proposal will cost in the region of €825,000 and it has sought a contribution from my Department towards this sum. The IUC has also indicated that it intends to seek contributions from the Departments of Health and Children and Tourism, Sport and Recreation towards the project.
