Vol. 550 No. 4

Written Answers. - Coastal Erosion.

Seamus Kirk

Question:

140 Mr. Kirk asked the Minister for the Marine and Natural Resources if he will consider the introduction of a coastal erosion remedial grant scheme for individual land or property owners who are willing to undertake the remedial works themselves; and if he will make a statement on the matter. [8660/02]

Primary responsibility for coastal protection works rest with the property owner, be that a private individual or a local authority. At present, there is a high demand for grant aid to protect public property and infrastructure and this demand far exceeds the funding available under the National Development Plan 2000-2006. There are no proposals at present to introduce a coastal protection scheme to assist individual land and property owners to undertake coast protection works.
