Vol. 550 No. 4

Written Answers. - Polling Stations.

Jan O'Sullivan

Question:

479 Ms O'Sullivan asked the Minister for the Environment and Local Government if he will ensure that a review is carried out nationally in relation to the suitability of polling booths in view of the difficulties relating to distance and other factors experienced by voters in the recent referendum; if he will ensure this takes place before the general election; and if he will make a statement on the matter. [8905/02]

The making of a polling scheme which divides a county or county borough into polling districts and appoints a polling place for each polling district for the purpose of holding elections is, under electoral law, a reserved function of local authorities. Returning officers are required to provide a sufficient number of polling stations – which incorporate polling booths – at every polling place and such stations must be conveniently distributed for the accommodation of electors. The allocation of electors to polling stations is also a matter for the appropriate returning officer.
