Vol. 550 No. 4

Written Answers. - Compensation Payments.

Michael Ring

Question:

567 Mr. Ring asked the Minister for Arts, Heritage Gaeltacht and the Islands the reason a person (details supplied) in County Mayo has not received a ewe cull compensation scheme payment for 2001. [8821/02]

According to information provided to my Department, the person mentioned is in the REPS scheme. As the ewe compensation scheme run by my Department is an alternative, rather than an addition, to REPS, no payment is due to the person in this instance. If the person only joined REPS during 2001 he should write to Dúchas, the heritage service of my Department, confirming the date he joined REPS and my staff will examine his claim to see if he is entitled to a payment for the time he was not in REPS.

Question:

568 Mr. Ring asked the Minister for Arts, Heritage Gaeltacht and the Islands if she will give details of the Dúchas compensation schemes for farmers with commonage affected by the framework document for de-stocking levels; and if she will make a statement on the matter. [8844/02]

It is intended that the scheme referred to by the Deputy will compensate farmers for loss of earnings-profits as a result of any destocking requirements in the commonage framework plans. Any payments will, of course, be subject to the polluter pays principle.
