Vol. 550 No. 4

Written Answers. - Crime Levels.

Seán Haughey

Question:

629 Mr. Haughey asked the Minister for Justice, Equality and Law Reform if he will request the Garda to deal with a serious problem of crime, vandalism and lawlessness generally in an area (details supplied) in Dublin 5; if the drug and joyriding problem in this locality will also be tackled; if his attention has been drawn to the fact that the scout den in this parish has recently been extensively damaged by fire for the second occasion; and if he will make a statement on the matter. [9324/02]

I am informed by the Garda authorities that Garda management are aware of the problems in the area being referred to by the Deputy and that they have put in place specific measures to tackle these problems.

In addition, the community police continue to actively encourage the local community to participate in the Neighbourhood Watch scheme and gardaí attend meetings of the local business association, where crime prevention advice is given. School talks are also provided in the area by the gardaí as part of the national schools talk programme.

In relation to the Deputy's specific query concerning fire damage caused on two occasions, in September 2001 and March 2002, to the scout hut in the parish, I am informed by the Garda authorities that proceedings have commenced in relation to the first incident and that the other case remains under investigation.
