Vol. 550 No. 4

Written Answers. - Schools Building Projects.

Paul Connaughton

Question:

719 Mr. Connaughton asked the Minister for Education and Science the position with an application for a new school by Killimor national school, Ballinasloe, County Galway; if he will meet with the Killimor school building action group to discuss this; and if he will make a statement on the matter. [8552/02]

The allocation for primary buildings in 2002 is €153.6 million, which is a record level of funding and demonstrates this Government's commitment to improving accommodation in primary schools. This is almost four times the previous Government's investment in 1997.

Due to the greatly increased level of activity in the primary buildings area since this Government came into office, there has been a substantial increase in the number of major and minor building projects in construction and this has given rise to a record level of building and refurbishment activity.

A building project for Killimor national school, Killimor, Ballinasloe, County Galway, is currently in architectural planning as part of the Government's programme. The project will continue to the preparation of tender documents and the invitation of tenders, as soon as possible, under the expanded building programme.

A proposed major building project for the school referred to by the Deputy will proceed to architectural planning, as soon as possible, under the expanded building programme. As regards the safety issue referred to in the details supplied my Department is liaising with the Office of Pub lic Works with a view to having the necessary works carried out, as soon as possible.
