Vol. 550 No. 4

Written Answers. - Payment Structures.

Michael Ring

Question:

728 Mr. Ring asked the Minister for Education and Science when he will have a procedure in place where special needs assistants in second level schools will be paid directly from his Department in Athlone, similar to those in primary level schools. [8599/02]

Enda Kenny

Question:

817 Mr. Kenny asked the Minister for Education and Science if it is proposed to equate the payment structure of special needs assistants in second level schools with those of special needs assistants in primary schools; if it is intended in future to pay special needs assistants in second level schools directly from his Department's offices in Athlone; if he has considered this option; and if he will make a statement on the matter. [8967/02]

I propose to take Questions Nos. 728 and 817 together.

Since 1 September 2001, the payment structure for special needs assistants at second level is the same as that in force at first level. My Department is considering ways by which the centralised payroll services, which it operates on behalf of school authorities, can be enhanced to provide an improved payroll service to schools. Implementation of any proposals for enhancement of this service will be subject to the agreement of the school management representative bodies.

Question No. 729 answered with Question No. 714.
