Vol. 550 No. 4

Written Answers. - School Supervision.

Breeda Moynihan-Cronin

Question:

69 Mrs. B. Moynihan-Cronin asked the Minister for Education and Science if, in view of the fact that extra-curricular activities are an integral and essential part of a holistic education at second-level, his contingency plans for supervision will allow such activities to continue; the policy which currently applies; and if he will make a statement on the matter. [9230/02]

Contingency arrangements were drawn up by the representative management groups, the joint managerial body, JMB, the Irish Vocational Education Association, IVEA, and the Association of Community and Comprehensive Schools, ACS, following detailed discussions with officials of my Department. Under the terms of the contingency plan agreed it is necessary for the boards of management of each school to develop an interim policy on extracurricular activities. It was agreed that this policy would be predicated on the need to lessen disruption for the duration of the dispute. The policy should provide for a balance between the need to minimise substitution requirements and the need to continue to promote certain non-classroom activities.
