Vol. 550 No. 4

Written Answers. - Schools Building Projects.

Jan O'Sullivan

Question:

794 Ms O'Sullivan asked the Minister for Education and Science when his Department will release funding in order that the building project for St. Clement's secondary school, County Limerick can proceed; and if he will make a statement on the matter. [8848/02]

The allocation for post-primary buildings in 2002 is €182.3 million, which is a record level of funding and demonstrates the Government's commitment to improving the accommodation situation in post-primary schools. This is almost four times the previous Government's investment in 1997.

Due to the greatly increased level of investment in the post-primary buildings area since the Government came into office, there has been a substantial increase in the number of major and minor building projects in construction. This has given rise to a record level of building and refurbishment activity.

The building unit of my Department has received a stage 3 submission, developed sketch scheme, in relation to the proposed building project at St. Clement's secondary school. The project is not yet at a sufficiently advanced stage of architectural planning to decide when it will go to construction.

Jim Mitchell

Question:

795 Mr. J. Mitchell asked the Minister for Education and Science if, in respect of a gaelscoil (details supplied) in Dublin 7, he is in a position to give the go ahead for the construction of a modern two storey school on the current site. [8849/02]

The gaelscoil referred to by the Deputy is currently in temporary accommodation in the grounds of Naomh Fionbarra GAA Club, Dublin 7. The Deputy will appreciate the difficulty in acquiring a suitable permanent site in this area.

When a suitable permanent site is acquired a proposed building project will proceed to architectural planning, as soon as possible, under the Government's expanded building programme.
