Vol. 550 No. 4

Written Answers. - Schools Building Projects

Nora Owen

Question:

851 Mrs. Owen asked the Minister for Education and Science the progress being made in providing an extension and refurbishment to a junior and senior national school (details supplied) in County Dublin. [9115/02]

The allocation for primary buildings in 2002 is €153.6 million, which is a record level of funding and demonstrates the Government's commitment to improving accommodation in primary schools. This is almost four times the previous Government's investment in 1997. Because of the greatly increased level of activity in the primary buildings area since the Government came into office, there has been a substantial increase in the number of major and minor building projects in construction and this has given rise to a record level of building and refurbishment activity.

St. Cronan's junior national school is being extended and refurbished as part of the Government's programme and is currently in architectural planning. I have recently authorised the building unit of my Department to appoint a design team for the building project at St. Cronan's senior national school. The planning and building unit of my Department will be in contact with the board of management of the school shortly.

Alan Shatter

Question:

852 Mr. Shatter asked the Minister for Education and Science if his attention has been drawn to the fact that the roof of St. Peters special school, Lucena Clinic, Orwell Road, Rathgar, is leaking and in very poor condition, that there is a presence of asbestos in the corrugated roof sheeting, ceiling tiles, floor tiles, boiler gaskets and blackshire systems, and that there is an urgent necessity to remove and replace the ceiling tiles; if his Department will sanction the funding for the construction of a new roof; and if he will provide such sanction in order to enable the essential work to be undertaken without further delay. [9143/02]

A proposed major building project for St. Peters special school, Lucena Clinic, Orwell Road, Rathgar, will proceed to architectural planning as soon as possible under the expanded building programme. My Department has been in contact with the Office of Public Works regarding the issue of asbestos with a view to having the necessary works carried out as soon as possible.

Brian Hayes

Question:

853 Mr. B. Hayes asked the Minister for Education and Science his plans to rationalise the existing national school at a location (details supplied) in Dublin 12; the discussions which have taken place between the board of management and his Department on this matter; and if he will make a statement on the matter. [9156/02]

My Department will be in contact shortly with the diocesan authorities which own the site of the school to which the Deputy refers and which is subject to a lease arrangement. Because the land on which the school is built is not owned by my Department, the question of disposal or otherwise is a matter for the diocesan authorities.

Dinny McGinley

Question:

854 Mr. McGinley asked the Minister for Education and Science the position regarding the proposed sports hall for the Rosses community school, Dungloe, County Donegal; and if he will make a statement on the matter. [9175/02]

The allocation for post-primary buildings in 2002 is €182.3 million, which is a record level of funding and demonstrates this Government's commitment to improving accommodation in post-primary schools. This is almost four times the previous Government's investment in 1997. Because of the greatly increased level of investment in the post-primary buildings area since this Government came into office, there has been a substantial increase in the number of major and minor building projects in construction and this has given rise to a record level of building and refurbishment activity.

The school to which the Deputy refers is to receive a physical education hall as part of the Government's programme and is currently at a combined stage 4-5 in architectural planning. It will progress to stage 6, tender action and report, as soon as possible under the expanded building programme.
