Vol. 550 No. 4

Written Answers. - Schools Refurbishment.

Ulick Burke

Question:

865 Mr. U. Burke asked the Minister for Education and Science the number of national schools in County Galway which have sought extensions or refurbishments or new schools; the stage of progress in planning for each; and the possibility that any of these mentioned will receive sanction to advance in the current school year. [9259/02]

The allocation for primary buildings in 2002 is €153.6 million, which is a record level of funding and demonstrates the Government's commitment to improving the accommodation in primary schools. This is almost four times the previous Government's investment in 1997. Because of the greatly increased level of activity in the primary buildings area since the Government came into office, there has been a substantial increase in the number of major and minor building projects in construction and this has given rise to a record level of building and refurbishment activity.

Applications for improved accommodation or other capital works have been received from the majority of the primary schools in County Galway. These include schools for which applications are being assessed and those which have proposed building projects at various stages of architectural planning or in construction. My Department is committed to providing improved accommodation at these primary schools as soon as possible as part of the Government's expanded building programme.
