75 Ms O'Sullivan asked the Minister for Education and Science the reason he has agreed to the postponement of all inservice training for all second level teachers from 4 March 2002; the implications of this for the professional development of teachers; and if he will make a statement on the matter. [9229/02]
The decision to the postpone in-service in post-primary schools relates to provision planned to take place within the school day only. This decision was taken, in agreement with the school management authorities, in order to reduce the need for substitution cover and thus alleviate pressure and minimise disruption in schools in the current situation. To ensure that adequate support will be available to teachers to enable implementation as planned of all revised syllabuses and also to provide ongoing professional support, a range of support materials and resources for teachers is being developed by the various subject support services and my Department. Full details of these materials will be made available by 30 April 2002.
