Vol. 550 No. 4

Written Answers. - Vocational Education Committees.

Paul Bradford

Question:

80 Mr. Bradford asked the Minister for Education and Science his policy regarding the establishment of full-time tuition and co-ordinator posts in the VEC adult literacy service. [9213/02]

The adult literacy services are delivered locally by the vocational education committees with funding provided by my Department. Within the constraints of its grant for this purpose, each VEC is free to decide on the manner of delivery, including the location of literacy centres and whether literacy tutors and organisers should be full or part-time staff. In April 2001, my Department introduced a structure for the employment of full-time literacy organisers, covering communications, recruitment, pay and conditions. A structure for part-time organisers is in course of preparation. Returns from vocational education committees to the Department for the service for December 2001 show that, of literacy tutors and organisers, 57 and 61 respectively are full-time and 1,193 and 80 are part-time. There are also 4,136 voluntary tutors.

Question No. 81 answered with Question No. 74.
