Vol. 550 No. 4

Written Answers. - Adult Education.

P. J. Sheehan

Question:

82 Mr. Sheehan asked the Minister for Education and Science the reason for the delay in implementing workplace literacy programmes. [9214/02]

There has been no delay in implementing workplace literacy programmes. The National Adult Literacy Agency has trained a number of tutors to provide literacy in the workplace and has promoted the availability of the service among employer organisations. A pilot project has started in a large firm in the Dublin area and last year five pilot projects programmes ran successfully for workers in the local authority sector in co-operation between my Department, the National Adult Literacy Agency, the vocational education committees and the Local Government Management Services Board. Half the cost of the programme was paid by the local authority national partnership advisory group, a network representing local authority trade unions and management and half by the Department. It will be expanded further in 2002 and it is intended to eventually make it available to all local authorities that wish to participate. The scheme is tailored to the needs of the participants, which includes scheduling the timing of the tuition in agreement with the employers.
