Vol. 550 No. 4

Written Answers. - School Staffing.

Michael Creed

Question:

96 Mr. Creed asked the Minister for Education and Science the reason under the new arrangements for supervision and substitution in post-primary schools, these staff are paid more per hour than teachers in certain circumstances. [9215/02]

During the negotiations with the teacher unions on supervision and substitution the three teacher unions insisted on a premium rate for supervision work. The rate of €34.28 per hour was offered. This has since been rejected by the ASTI and TUI as inadequate for this work. In applying the contingency arrangements it was considered appropriate to apply the same level of pay to supervisors as had been offered to teachers in order to ensure that suitable personnel would be attracted to these posts.

The rate of €34.28 is greater than the hourly rate payable to certain part-time teachers at present. This hourly part-time rate will be reviewed in the context of the implementation of the Protection of Employees (Part-Time Work) Act, 2001.
